October 30th 2008

Mr. Brendan Flynn, Mr Al McCabe (Ireland Monument Committee), accompanied by Dr. Pat McGeer and Perviz Madon (Air India Flight 182 Families Association) met with Vancouver Parks Board officials regarding The Ireland Monument.

At the meeting, copies of the artwork Hurling / Hockey and Irish Music and Dance were presented to the Parks Board officials for review.

Ireland’s Ambassador to Canada, Mr. Declan Kelly with Mr. Al McCabe of the Ireland Monument Committee, Mr. Patrick Reid and Mr. Jim Carney following their meeting at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver B.C. Canada on 20th October 2008. Committee Chairman Brendan Flynn and Dr. Pat McGeer were also in attendance.

News Update September 22nd 2008.

The committee is delighted to announce that the artwork for the Ireland Monument has been completed by Artist David Preston Smith in Nova Scotia.

We express our thanks to David and his colleague Dr. Garth Vaughan for all their help and assistance to date to complete this important aspect of the project.

The committee will ask Dr. Vaughan’s daughter, Kate Hammet-Vaughan, Senator Pat Carney (Ret) and members of the 100 Names to unveil the artwork to supporters at Mahony’s Public House U.B.C. on September 30th 2008.

News Update August 8th 2008. The committee members continue towards the goal of completing The Ireland Monument.

News Update July 30 2008. Mr. Brian and Sheena Quish of Port Moody BC have joined the Ireland Monument Committee and will focus their efforts on fundraising for the project. Brian is the grand nephew of Edmund Foley, one of The Forgotten Ten. 

NEWS UPDATE July 1 2008: On 19th June 2008, a copy of the Ireland Monument document was delivered to the Office of the Secretary General of the President of Ireland at Aras an Uachtarain in Dublin Ireland.

A copy was also delivered to the Vancouver Constituency Office of Gordon Campbell, Premier of B.C.  

The Committee is delighted to announce that the drawings proposed for Side 2 and 4 of the Monument are near completion by the artist, David Preston Smith in Nova Scotia. The Committee is very grateful to David and his colleague Dr. Garth Vaughan for all their help and assistance to The Ireland Monument. 

July 1st 2008. The names of one hundred Irish who have made a significant contribution to the Nation of Canada can now be found on the Names Page. The remaining names will be uploaded in due course.

NEWS UPDATE June 15 2008: The Ireland Monument Committee met with the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation on June 5th, 2008 at the Parks Board offices in Stanley Park. 

The Ireland Monument Committee and the Families of Air India Flight 182 now look forward to the completion of the Ireland Monument in close proximity to the Air India Memorial in Stanley Park, Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

June 8th 2008 - Announcement

The Ireland Monument Committee extends heartfelt thanks to those competitors who submitted artwork for consideration in recent weeks for Side 2 and Side 4 of The Ireland Monument including:

Two sketches by David Preston Smith have been selected as the winning designs to be used on Side 2 and Side 4 of the Monument.

For Side 2, David Preston Smith’s drawing depicting the Birth of Ice Hockey in Canada in the early 1800’s from Ireland’s National game of Hurling in Windsor, Nova Scotia has been selected.

David’s colleague, Dr. Garth Vaughan of Windsor, Nova Scotia, is to be credited for his extensive research in recent years to the birth of Ice Hockey in Canada and the influence the Irish had in Canada’s winter sport.  The artwork also recognizes the influence the Mi’kmaq Nation had in this historic event.

For Side 4, David has created a wonderful scene celebrating Irish Dancing and Music in Canada.
