November 2008 A Chairde, Friends throughout Canada and Ireland, Since May 2005, following the historic visit of Her Excellency, Mary McAleese, President of Ireland to Vancouver, this committee has focused on completing The Ireland Monument in Vancouver.  It is now the hope and focus of each committee member to have the monument located in Stanley Park Vancouver B.C. prior to the 2010 Winter Olympics due to be hosted in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. The Irish people have landed in Canada over the course of 300 years.  Each person has their own story to tell regarding why they chose Canada as their “home away from home”.  Since our arrival, we have assimilated with all Canadians from coast to coast and, in becoming part of Canada’s fabric, we Irish have achieved much for ourselves.  We will be ever grateful to Canada and Canadians for that opportunity. However, many Irish have taken it upon themselves to contribute to Canada in their own way.  The impact of that collective contribution is immense and all Irish and Canadians can be truly proud of those contributions that continue even to this day.  We Irish who now live in Canada are proud to say “We are Canadians to the core”, just as we will also say “We are proud of our Irish heritage and where we have come from on the island of Ireland”. The next goal for this committee is to make a full presentation to the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation in Vancouver, B.C. in January of 2009.  The presentation will include a request to have the Monument erected in Stanley Park in close proximity to the Air India Memorial dedicated to Air India Flight 182 tragedy which occurred in 1985 over the south coast of Ireland.  In building the Ireland Monument at this location we believe new friendship can be born between the people of Ireland and India and we look forward to the completion of the Ireland Monument adjacent to The Air India Memorial to strengthen that friendship. It is our intention to include a petition with the names of those who support the Ireland Monument at Stanley Park with our submission.  We hope many Irish and indeed Canadians will take the opportunity to sign the petition to demonstrate in a cordial way to The City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation of the importance of completing The Ireland Monument at this location in Vancouver. The Ireland Monument represents the very best of what the Irish have given to Canada since before Confederation.  It will be a historical marker for Canada just as it will be an extension of Irish history beyond Ireland’s shores. In that respect, we kindly ask for your support by signing the petition document. For those who would also like to contribute financially towards the completion of The Ireland Monument we will be very grateful.  Whatever the donation, no matter how small, each contribution will be recognized by this committee in due course. In Gaelic we say “Go raibh mile maith agat.” (Thank You very Much.) Very Best Regards
